Puerto Rico Must Go to UN
Puerto Rican Governor Aníbal Acevedo Vilá has an extraordinary opportunity to demand more autonomy for Puerto Rico under the protection of the United Nations, political leader Juan Mari Bras has said.

Mari Bras said that last Friday´s FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) raids have pulled together Puerto Ricans from different lines of independence.

Squads of FBI agents raided houses of Puerto Rico independence supporters under the pretext they were trying to thwart an alleged terrorist plan, but political circles have seen them as a threatening action to weaken the growing independence trend in the island.

The FBI found no evidence of any terror planning in their violent raids.

For that reason, Governor Acevedo Vilá must go to institutions such as the UN General Assembly, so that Puerto Rico can get true autonomic power according to international law.

"There is a chance to ask the United Nations for protection, although we don´t know if the United Nations is in conditions to provide it, because it has been damaged by actions of (George W.) Bush and (Richard) Cheney," he said.

Mari Bras added that the FBI actions give "a unique opportunity to the Acevedo Vilá government to demand autonomic power for Puerto Rico," as some leaders of the governing Democratic Popular Party (PPD) want.

The left-wing leader is among those who harbor hopes that Acevedo Vilá "can vindicate his action as a governor" against what he described as violations by US federal authorities.
