Housing Conference in Guatemala
Over 250 representatives from 22 countries are attending the 43rd Inter-American Housing Conference, which began Monday in Guatemala.

Initiatives to achieve sustainable housing development, and strengthen financing for the sector will be analyzed in the two-day meeting.

Carlos Corado Lanza, president of the Inter-American Association for Housing highlighted the importance for Guatemala to host this conference, as it will allow the exchange of information and technology to improve the quality of constructions.

Guatemala has a housing shortage ranging from 1.3-1.5 million, with another 700,000 houses needing to be repaired, Lanza noted.

Granting about 35,000 subsidies for constructions in 2006, mainly for the victims of tropical storm Stan, is among the Guatemalan authorities´ goals.
