December 3rd, 2015 (ICR News) Costa Rica’s secretive intelligence agency, the Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS) is investigating the reason behind at least two trips by children of fugitive Mexican drug lord, Joaquin “El Chapo” (Shorty) Guzman to Costa Rica in 2014, DIS director, Mariano Figueres told the daily La Nacion.
Figueres told La Nacion that the visits occurred around the time of the Costa Rica presidential elections and that the drug lord’s children visited a “tourist site” in San Carlos, Alajuela, but declined to elaborate further, citing the ongoing investigation.
At least three of El Chapo’s eight children are wanted by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Figueres declined to disclose which of the drug lord’s children visited the country, saying that the information is part of an ongoing investigation surrounding the penetration of Mexican drug cartels in Costa Rica.
In related news, Costa Rica’s Attorney General, Jorge Chavarria, said last month that Costa Rican assassins working for local drug trafficking organizations are traveling to Mexico to receive training such as target practice, intelligence gathering, escape tactics, and how to use high-caliber weapons like AK-47s from El Chapo’s Sinaloa Cartel.
El Chapo made an audacious escape from one of Mexico’s highest-security prisons in July, which was even captured on video.
