Powerful magnitude 6.8 earthquake strikes near Costa Rica, Panama border

December 8th, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) A powerful earthquake measuring between 6.6 and 6.8 magnitude on the Richter scale rocked southern Costa Rica and northern Panama in the early morning hours Monday.

 

The quake’s epicenter was 12 miles (20km) ESE of Punta de Burica, Panama, slightly offshore and just south of the Costa Rican border where at struck at 2:54 a.m.

 

In Costa Rica, strong shaking was reported in Golfito, Sabalito, Ciudad Neily, and Pavones.  Moderate shaking was reported in Perez Zeledon, the San Jose metro area, Zarcero, Aserri and Limon.

 

The earthquake follows two earthquakes on Saturday, both measuring more than 6.0-magnitude, in the same area.

 

There were no immediate reports of significant damage or injuries in Costa Rica.

    Check out http://www.GlobalIncidentMap.com. They report information from a number of different government sources world wide. According to their data, we’ve “enjoyed” five sizeable earthquakes in this area since Saturday around noon.

    This is what I sent to friends and family on the subject:
    We had a 5.8 around noon on Saturday that lasted for a good minute and a half. The water in the pool sloshed around for a long time! The epicentre, at a depth of only 22km, was about 30 km from us ( as the toucan flies….if he’s inclined to fly in that direction) off the tip of that peninsula we share with Panama. No damage, but it was a fun ride for a while!
    Apparently a 6.1 occurred at roughly the same time as the 5.8 and was located in approximately the same area which may explain why the earthquake seemed to last for so long. The 6.1 was at a depth of 40 km, though. Either way, it/they really shook things up around here for a bit.
    Sunday morning, around 3:00 am, we had another double earthquake located in the same region as before. This one was a 6.7 at only 10 km deep and a 6.2 at 20 km deep. Again, it seemed to last a good minute or so, which was because they were one after the other. This one REALLY rattled the place and actually knocked over a few things. No damage, of course. You could also hear “the earth ring” as this was a noisy one.
    Between this quake and the one on Saturday around noon, there was also a double earthquake on Sunday, of similar magnitude, off the coast of Guatemala. We’ll have to see if the same area off the coast of Guatemala gets another one (or two) tomorrow.
    Monday Up-date:
    I noticed on the site that I use, there was a 4.4 earthquake off the shore of Guatemala today. I think it may have been 30 km deep. As I was reporting this to my husband, WE had another tremor! It lasted a good minute or so, again, but must have been in the high 4 to low 5 range because only the keys by the door wiggled, and not the stained glass Tudor Rose hanging in the picture window which would have indicated something in the mid 5 to 6 range. Seismologists have their indicator toys and we have ours!
