Large chunk of volcano wall breaks off, falls into Turrialba’s active crater

November 27^th, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) A section of the volcano wall at the Turrialba volcano has broken off and fallen into the volcano’s active crater, volcanologists from the National Seismological Network (RSN) of the University of Costa Rica (UCR) confirmed yesterday.

The section of wall measured 82 feet in width and 328 feet in height, according to the RSN.

Volcanologists said that the volcano could expel the material in the coming days, though it should not pose any danger to nearby towns.

The volcano remains active, and its emissions have produced acid rain in several communities in recent days, including La Central, La Picada, La Silvia and La Reunión, according to volcanologists.

Turrialba roared to life on October 29^th in the most significant eruption witnessed at the volcano in 150 years.
