In survey, Costa Rica police admit to discrimination against LGBT community

October 13th, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) A survey of police officers conducted by officials of the Ministry of Public Security along with the Directorate of Immigration reveals that members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community face discrimination at the hands of officers.

 

In the survey, in which nearly 500 police, traffic, and immigration officers responded, 17.7% said they felt it was acceptable to demand bribes from gay people while 20.4% found it acceptable to detain gay people without probable cause.

 

A further 15.7% said they felt it was acceptable to physically harm gay people without cause and 13.5% felt the sexual abuse of a gay person was acceptable.

 

Further, many officers said it is better to ignore complaints of domestic violence in same-sex couples rather than respond.

 

More than 60% of officers said they believe that homosexuality is a disease or illness.

 

Deputy Minister of the Interior, Carmen Muñoz, called the situation a major challenge.

      By the way, I don’t always agree with you but enjoy reading your comments. At least I can understand what you’re communicating! That’s not always the case on most forums today.

    This is so revolting it borders on humorous.
    15.7 % said it is acceptable to physically harm gay people with no cause—-you can’t make this shit up!
    Cops in costa rica are so F’d up it is comical.
    Tico behavior in general used to really piss me off. Now | just laugh and every day when I wake up I thank God I’m not a Tico……

      I think some people should read the BIBLE concerning what god said about Homosexuals. IT IS THERE. He is not pleased with them.

        This is true about the bible. But the police are a Public Force not a Church force. The job of the police is to enforce laws not pass judgement nor does the bible run a country. If they want to get into all that stuff tell them to quit and become priests. Don’t get me started on what priest are commonly known to do. Pretty sure the bible doesn’t approve of that either.

        We probably shouldn’t get into this, since Joe is right–the police exist to protect the public, not only some members of it (while harming others)–but I’ve yet to be persuaded that the Bible is particularly anti-gay.

        Although as a non-Christian who doesn’t believe that the Bible is the word of God in the first place, I have to judge Paul’s famous anti-gay diatribe in Romans as a rant that gets off the subject, if you read that rant you see that Paul’s point isn’t that homsexuality is wrong but that idolatry is wrong. Apparently, he was mainly writing about a set of folks who were both worshipping idols and fancying it up with gay orgies and the like. I think that even for Paul, probably the most anti-gay author of the Bible, heterosexual activity would have been condemned on the same grounds, namely when it becomes a false god.

        But even if a person is a Bible-believing Christian who is convinced that the Bible condemns gays, there is nothing in the Bible to justify mistreating them, which is the issue the survey of the police reveals. The New Testament at least is quite clear that all have sinned, and all need mercy.
