July 21st, 2014 (InsideCostaRica.com) Former president Laura Chinchilla’s legal team is seeking 60 days in jail and ¢100 million in compensation from Alberto Rodriguez Baldi, against whom Chinchilla brought charges of defamation as the result of statements made by Baldi on Facebook.
The trial began last Monday and a ruling is expected sometime today.
Chinchilla filed charges against Baldi in June 2013, just days after Baldi published a post on Facebook that stated that Chinchilla purchased land worth millions of dollars in Nicoya, Guanacaste.
Baldi, who is in the hotel business in La Fortuna de San Carlos, also stated that Chinchilla has business interests in wind energy.
The former president says that both accusations are untrue and denies any allegations of corruption or mismanagement of public funds on her part during her time in office.
“You can’t call me a thief because I’ve never stolen even five colones. My only assets are the house where I live with my husband and son, a 1999 automobile, and another vehicle I purchased recently,” Chinchilla said during proceedings last week.
