US citizen brutally murdered in Costa Rica: police

SAN JOSE, February 10, 2014 (AFP) – A 64-year-old American was killed by assailants in Costa Rica who dragged him out of his vehicle and cut his throat, the police said Monday.

Kurt Hergis, who had been living in Costa Rica for eight months, was intercepted by four men Sunday night as he was returning to his home in San Carlos, a woman accompanying him told police.

His companion, who was identified by policy only by her first name Martha, said the men pulled Hergis out of his pick-up truck, hit him in the head, stabbed him and cut his throat.

She said she survived by begging for her life, police said.

The motive for the crime was not immediately known.

The local press said the assailants were driving a luxury vehicle in an area frequented by drug traffickers.

They are a far cry better than the “justice system” here. No more being arrested for the 35th time for assault or robbery and being released with a slap on the wrist, just a shiny piece of hot lead at high velocity and the parasitic problem goes away.

          it’s not complicated is it?

    • disgusted

If this was a random murder I assume was for his luxury car! Or is there a back story of revenge?? Another reason to arm and protect yourself. I hope ICR can shed some light on this in the next issue. This gives cause for all of us Tico’s and Gringo’s alike. So sad!

    • K Schnelle

hey “disgusted,” one minor detail you got backwards: the assailants (attackers) were the one in the luxury vehicle. not the victim being attacked and killed. duh.

i live in phoenix alot where you can carry a weapon as you please , drug dealers that try to set up in the park cross the way get shot all the while, no problems with the law, here they use the bars and barb wire to make tent cities and they work on a chain gang.

Costa Rica, the happiest country on this planet and also number 4 in the whole world for exporting . . . dig this, high tech medical equipment! This is even more astonishing if you google “average IQ by country”.

Was Kurt a usa DEA agent? What info did the murderers have on his poor guy? Condolences to the family but the question is truly what was Kurt doing in CR? I have met soooo many special agents here and ex-military working for private security companies who are working out of CR. Will the truth be revealed?
