Some 800 U.S. citizens in Costa Rica could see Social Security benefits suspended

November 21^st, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) According to a press release sent by the United States Embassy in San José, some 800 U.S. citizens who receive U.S. Social Security benefits in Costa Rica could see their benefits interrupted in December because they have failed to complete and return a questionnaire.

“The Social Security Administration (SSA) regularly contacts beneficiaries with addresses on their SSA record that shows they reside outside the United States to verify their current status,” the embassy said.

According to the statement, this year questionnaires were sent to beneficiaries receiving their own benefits whose social security numbers ended in 50-99.  In addition, questionnaires were also mailed to beneficiaries who have representative payees (person receiving benefits on behalf of a minor or disabled person).

Those selected received the form along with a return envelope to the SSA facility in Pennsylvania.

In October, SSA mailed a follow-up notice to beneficiaries who did not respond to the original questionnaire sent in July 2013.

Now, those who have failed to return the questionnaire will see their Social Security benefits suspended by December 30^th, 2013 if they fail to complete, sign, and return the questionnaire form – known as the “Foreign Enforcement Questionnaire,” (form SSA-7162 or SSA-7161).

“If your benefits are interrupted for failure to return the questionnaire, it could take 45 days or longer to resume your payments,” the embassy statement said.

“Beneficiaries with questions or concerns regarding the questionnaire should contact[email protected]. When you e-mail, please include your full name, last four digits of the social security number receive benefits on, and two telephone numbers where we can reach you,” the statement advised.
