Rare tornado rips apart homes in Naranjo

June 5^th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) Though rare in Costa Rica, tornados do occur, as witnessed by residents of Calle Valverde in Naranjo de Alajuela yesterday afternoon.

In a matter of 30 minutes, a tornado swept through the community, tearing the roofs from homes, uprooting trees and power lines, and breaking windows.  At least 15 homes sustained damage.

Residents describe the sky as being as dark as night before the twister struck.

Several residents were injured from flying glass and debris, though no life-threatening injuries were reported.

The possessions of residents could be seen scattered on the ground, including appliances, computers, and televisions.

The tornado was accompanied by hail, according to the National Meteorological Institute (IMN).
