January 10th, 2013 (InsideCostaRica.com) A confrontation erupted between several squatters and private security guards working for the company “Matas de Costa Rica,” when the squatters attempted to re-enter private land belonging to the company. The confrontation ended with six of the squatters receiving gunshot wounds.
As confirmed by the media office of the Costa Rican Red Cross, one of the wounded iwas a woman identified by the last names Alvarado Ramirez, who receiving a gunshot to the head. She was taken to a clinic in Guápiles, where doctors determined that the bullet had only grazed the left side of her face.
Erick Calderon, Chief Deputy of the Fuerza Publica in Limon, said another one of the wounded, identified by the last names Ruiz Fuentes, was shot in his left harm, with the bullet producing both entry and exit wounds.
Calderón said that none of the squatters’ injuries were determined to be life threatening, after receiving clinical assessments from a clinic in Siquirres.
Calderon said that 100 members of the Fuerza Publica were mobilized and were able to control the situation.
He added that about 70 squatters continue to remain near the property’s perimeter, and are individuals who the Fuerza Publica had evicted from the same area four days ago.
