Professor who paid underage students for sex gets 45 years

December 7th, 2012 (InsideCostaRica.com) A Professor of Agriculture, who gave elementary and high school classes, paid students between 15,000 and 20,000 colons so that they would have sex with him.

Other students were raped, abused, or intimidated into having sex with him.

The Bribri Court, in Talamanca, sentenced the man to 45 years in prison. The professor, Jorge Alberto Conejo Calvo, is a 51 year-old man from Alajuela.

Judges Rosa Elena Gamboa, Xinia Marin and Carlos Cartin found the man guilty on two counts of rape, one count of sexual intercourse with a minor, three counts of paid sex with minors, and two counts of sexual abuse against a minor.

He was acquitted on 9 other rape cases, one sexual abuse crime and two offenses of paid sex with minors, which the District Attorney had initially charged him with.

According to the charges brought by the District Attorney’s office, the events for which the man was found guilty occurred in 2010.

During that time, he was working for an elementary school, as well as a high school in Bribri. The victims were five students between the ages of 10 and 16.

The Public Ministry stated that Conejo took advantage of his position as a teacher to carry out a series of “perverse… and excessive acts.”

Seventeen witnesses, among which were teachers and people close to the victims, participated in the trial.
