Bandits stick up police station, make off with firearms

November 19th, 2012 (InsideCostaRica.com) Unknown suspects took firearms, four ballistic vests and a communication radio yesterday in an armed robbery of the Mata Redonda Police Station, in the La Sabana section of San Jose.

Juan Carlos Arias, sub director of San Jose Fuerza Publica, stated that the robbery occurred because the officers in charge let their guard down.

Seven 9 mm handguns, magazines and ammunition, as well as four ballistic vests and a radio, were stolen.

According to Arias, a man entered the station and began asking normal questions to the police officer on duty, after which another man entered and put a gun to the officer’s face, as the officer was distracted with the first man.

The suspects put a gag on the officer’s mouth and tied him up.  Neighbors in the area later alerted authorities of the incident. Fuerza Publica says it is carrying out an investigation of the case. For the time being, they do not have any information regarding the suspects, their means of transportation, nor do they know how many people were involved.

Fuerza Publica says it is carrying out an intense operation in an attempt to capture the suspects and recover the firearms and police gear.
