Bolivia Boosts Legal and Constitutional
Autonomies
Trinidad, Bolivia - Bolivian president Evo
Morales, said here today his government
supports autonomies in the nine departments,
but legal and constitutional, to defend
national unity.
At the inauguration of the office which is
to attend that status in the región of Beni
(northeast), Morales explained the
autonomies have a legal frame based in the
new Political Constitution of the State, in
force since last February and approved at
the polls.
It�s the awareness of the people, he
affirmed which has allowed us to get to this
point with important structural and social
changes as part of a process of change that
begun in 2006, but irreversible, he said.
He also pointed out that social movements
play a leading role in the new task of
implementing the new charter, for which is
also needed a change of mentality from all
officials, he commented.
To construct the motherland, expressed the
President, we have to put away our
regionalism, individualism and ambition.
In this sense he called on prefects, mayors
and civic leaders of Beni and Santa Cruz,
Pando and Tarija, who in May and June, 2008
organized ilegal autonomic referendums, to
contribute and join the new process.
Morales stressed the need to keep going
forward in the struggle against corruption
and bureaucracy that has so damaged the
Andean nation.
The new office in Beni lays out the
foundation for greater coordination of the
región with the central government.
A similar office was opened in Santa Cruz
and by the end of the year, all regions will
have their office.
On Dcember 6 this year, in parallel to
general elections, we will carry out
autonomic consultations in the Gran Chaco
and the departments of La Paz, Oruro,
Cochabamba, Chuquisaca and Potosi.
