main demands from the government that will
assume power on June 1 are reducing poverty,
fighting unemployment and better quality of
life, as revealed by a poll published on
Tuesday in this capital.
The nationwide study from mid May supported
the Farabundo Marti National Liberation
Front (FMLN) government implementing an
anti-crisis plan, considering the inherited
economic and social situation.
More than 65 percent of the population
answered CID Gallup pollster's questions,
saying the crisis is very serious in the
Central American nation, and barely 28
percent accepted the category of less
serious, given by the outgoing Executive.
Analysts agreed with the people's worries,
after news reports about lack of public
funds, and others saying that the budget
deficit would reach $1.6 billion by the end
of 2009, were published.
The International Monetary Fund's last
report said El Salvador would grow less than
0.1 percent in the present year, while
remittances by Salvadorians that live abroad
continue to drop. The negative situation is
completed by less fiscal income by the
State, a problem that calls today for
reorganizing the national tax system.
The poll ratified the people's expectations
with the new administration and fulfilment
of its promises in the electoral campaign,
but it does not prevent from considering
significant the challenge that lies ahead of
