Colombian Authorities Capture 15 Rebels

Bogota - The Colombian authorities on Sunday captured a total of 15 members from two rebel groups in northeastern of the country, local media reported.

In rural area of the Arauquita municipality in the province of Arauca, close to the border with Venezuela, 12 members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) were captured, Gen. Rafael Alberto Neira, commander of the army's 18th Brigade, told local media.

As three of those arrested are minors, the three were turned over to the Colombian Family Welfare Agency, said the general.

In a separate operation, three members of the National Liberation Army (ELN) were arrested in Saravena also in Arauca, according to a police statement.

"Investigations discovered the main mission of these subversives was to harass and ambush members of government forces," it said.

The arrested were in charge of recruiting members and collecting protection money from businesses there, it said.

Both FARC, the country's largest anti-government group, and the ELN have a strong presence in Arauca as the thick jungle there provides a natural shelter for their guns and drugs trafficking.
