Swine Flu Totals: One "Confirmed", Three
"Probable", 51 "Suspect"
The 53 year old man who is suspected of
being infected with the A/H1N1 or swine flu
came into contact with 51 others, according
to a statement by the Ministra de Salud,
María Luisa Ávila. The minister said the
persons have been identified and are under
strict controls.
The minister added that the man is in
hospital due to a pneumonia complication and
due to his work in the service field came
into contact with many people.
"The 51 people have been contacted and
warned to report if they come down with
symptoms", said Ávila. The minister was
emphatic that none of the visited has
displayed any symptoms.
So far, Costa Rica has only one confirmed
case of the swine flu, which confirmation
was received on Saturday by the Centers for
Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta. The 21
year old man had recently returned from
Mexico.
Three others (two men and woman) are still
categorized as "probable", awaiting
confirmation by the CDC.
In total, 310 "suspected" cases have been
reported, of which 257 have been discarded.
Of those suspected is a 12 year old girl who
was admitted to the Hospital Nacional de
Niños (Chidlren's Hospital).
Minister Ávila said there is a distinction
between "suspected" and "probable", the
latter being cases confirmed by national
laboratories and waiting confirmation from
Atlanta before being confirmed.
The health minister said the young girl was
admitted to hospital as she came into
contact with one of the "probables" and is
displaying symptoms. "She is in good
condition. I have a chance to visit her. She
is asmathic and requires a lot of oxygen",
said Ávila.
