La Paz - Former US President James Carter
(1977-1981) kicked off an official visit to
Bolivia on Friday that will include meetings
with President Evo Morales and other
leaders. According to a press release from
the Carter Center, the schedule of the
two-day visit also includes a meeting with
officials from the National Election Court (CNE),
who will brief the ex US president on the
preparations for the December 6 general
elections.
Carter will give a master lecture entitled
"Culture of Peace and Democracy in the
Americas".
On Saturday, the ex president will travel to
Santa Cruz, where he will meet regional
authorities.
Before arriving in Bolivia, Carter had
visited Peru and Ecuador. He will leave La
Paz for Brazil on Sunday.
Relations between Bolivia and the United
States have been tense since September 2008,
when the government expelled US Ambassador
Philip Goldberg for supporting internal
opposition.
In November 2008, Bolivia suspended the
activities of the US Drug Enforcement Agency
(DEA) for conspiring against the government. |
