Guatemala Debt at 22 percent GDP

Guatemala - The Bank of Guatemala (BANGUAT) has over $4.3 billion in foreign debt, or 22 per cent its 2009 Gross Domestic Product (GDP). BANGUAT President Maria Antonieta del Cid says that stands for 57.1 per cent the fiscal deficit calculated for 2009.

A sizable part of the debt, some $225 million, will be covered with bonds from the Treasury but Congress has not approved the transaction.

If Congress opposes, Guatemala must either cut expenses or use government funds and BANGUAT only has a little over $1.2 million in deposits.

The Central Bank president says Guatemala's is the smallest foreign debt in Central America after El Salvador 37.1 percent of the GDP, Honduras 22.3, Nicaragua 71.1 and Costa Rica 39.3.
