China to Boost
Latin America Trade, Investments
Bogota - China is willing to boost trade and
investments in Latin America to ease the
impact of the current global financial
crisis, Chinese central bank governor,
Xiaochuan Zhou, said.
The Chinese official addressed the 50th
Annual Assembly of the Inter-American
Development Bank (IDB) being held in
Medellin, Colombia, where debates have
focused on the world economic crisis.
Zhou said this situation has caused a
reduction in liquidity, so cooperation among
countries can compensate for the commercial
losses and reduced investments.
He explained that conditions exist to boost
cooperation, because since 2001, trade
between China and the region has grown 40
percent, to 140 billion dollars in 2008.
In addition to traditional items, China has
exported hi-tech products, while Latin
America has invested 14 billion dollars in
the Asian country.
Zhou said China's direct investments in
Latin America and the Caribbean amount to 24
billion dollars.
He pointed out that China sees investment
opportunities in sectors linked to
satellites, aeronautics, biology, the
pharmaceutical industry, software, finance,
transportation and tourism.
