President Alan Garcia said on Wednesday that
his impression was that Bolivia had given up
the sea outlet "a long time ago."
"I think that long ago Bolivia had rejected
the sea outlet, because they didn't firmly
and clearly treat with Chile all the time.
We always say that we will not be an
obstacle to Bolivia's sea outlet," Garcia
told a local radio station.
Peru and Bolivia lost coastal territory to
Chile in a 19th century war. The conflict
also left Bolivia landlocked, throttling its
export potential.
Bolivia and Chile have since been locked in
a "cold war" with no full diplomatic
relations.
Since 2006, Bolivia and Chile have been
negotiating a sea outlet at foreign
minister's level.
However, Peru has filed a lawsuit against
Chile in the International Court of Justice,
challenging both countrys' current maritime
borders and thus complicating their dispute. |
