Commissioner Resigns
Bogota - Colombian high Peace Commissioner
Luis Carlos Restrepo resigned on Thursday to
seek a place in the Congress of the
Republic.
Announcing Restrepo's resignation, Colombian
President Alvaro Uribe hailed his
contribution and loyalty to the Armed
Forces.
Restrepo, who took office in 2002, worked on
the demobilization of the paramilitary group
United Self Defense of Colombia (AUC) and
the approach with the guerillas, like the
Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC)
and the National Liberation Army (ELN).
During his work, "50,170 armed people were
demobilized. The task was done with total
independence, justice and transparency,"
Uribe said.
Uribe wished a good luck to Restrepo for his
aim to come to the Congress of the Republic.
However, Restrepo has been criticized by
people who considered his efforts were not
enough to fulfill the peace.
Restrepo has announced his decision for
days, but on Thursday he officially resigned
from the post of peace commissioner.
