"Joe" Biden To Visit Costa Rica Later This
Month
Joseph Robinette Biden Jr or Joe Biden as he
is more commonly known, vice president of
the United States, will be making his first
official visit to Costa Rica on March 29.
Biden will be taking part in the Cumbre de
Líderes Progresistas (Progressive Leaders
Forum) which is being held in Viña del Mar,
Chile, on March 27 and 28.
Costa Rica and Chile are the only two Latin
American countries on Biden's list to visit.
The visit also marks the first official
visit to Costa Rica and Latin America by an
agent of the new US president, Barack Obama.
Biden unsuccessfully sought the Democratic
presidential nomination in 1988 and 2008,
both times dropping out early in the
process. Barack Obama selected Biden to be
the Democratic Party nominee for Vice
President in the 2008 U.S. election.
Costa Rican president, Oscar Arias, invited
Barack Obama to Costa Rica following the
Obama swearing in, saying that Costa Rica
has much to contribute to the president of
the United States in his intentions to bring
peace to the world.
Arias is hopeful to have have a meeting with
Obama next month when the two will be at the
Fifth Summit of the Americas hosted by
Trinidad and Tobago between April 17 and 19,
2009, as the 34 member states of the
Organization of American States (OAS) are
continuing to fine-tune the Draft
Declaration of Commitment of Port of Spain.
"President Obama should visit Costa Rica for
many reasons: 60 years ago we declared peace
to the world by abolishing our army. Since
then we have peace like no one else on the
continent and possibly in the world and also
has the oldest democracy in the region and I
won the Nobel Peace Prize. We are an oasis
of peace, tolerance, freedom and democracy
would be a beautiful gesture if you choose
to come Costa Rica" said Arias on January 21
in a letter and instructing Costa
Rica's ambassador to the United states,
Tomás Dueñas, to deliver with a formal
invitation to Obama.
