Buses Could be Rolling Within Three Months
The "interlinea" - the buses to provide
public transportation service between
sectors - are expected to roll in the next
few months, following the rejection of an
appeal by Tribunal Administrativo de
Transporte Público filed by Discar SA.
Discar operates the La Periférica bus
service that provides intersectoral service
between Hatillo and Guadalupe and was the
last stumbling block in getting the yellow
or intesectoral buses running, following a
number of delays related to the manner in
which the Ministerio de Obras Públicas y
Transportes (MOPT) awarded the concession.
Last year, the routes were mapped out, the
bus stop signs erected and the buses ready
to roll. However, appeals by losers of the
concession bid stalled the service that
connects communities like Santa Ana to La
Uruca to Moravia to Desamparados to
Alajuelita to Escazu and back to Santa Ana.
Currently, all bus routes begin and end in
San Jose. The interlinea buses would skit
the downtown core altogether.
For example, travelling from Santa Ana to
Moravia, entails taking the Sant Ana bus to
downtown San Jose (la Coca Cola), the taking
the Sabana urban bus or walking almost a
kilometre through downtown San Jose to the
Moravia bus stop on the north side of the
downtown core.
With the interlinea, travelling from Santa
Ana to Moravia would only mean one change of
bus, in La Uruca and completely avoid
entering San Jose. In total seven routes
connect a ring around the downtown centre to
the outlying communities.
With the rejection of the appeal, the
viceministra de Transportes, Rosaura
Montero, says that the Consejo de Transporte
Público (CTO) has the authority to renew the
concessions already awarded.
Notwithstanding the CTP is expected to to
define the requirements for the concession,
one of which not to require brand new buses
as in the original licitation and have the
buses rolling within three months. |
