Germany Sign Agreement To Promote Development in
Latin America
Santiago - The UN Economic Commission for Latin
America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) signed Friday an
agreement with Germany to implement a program
through 2012 to promote development and social
cohesion in Latin America.
According to the agreement, Germany will give an
initial contribution of 3.5 million euros for the
sustainable development and social cohesion
promotion program in Latin American and the
Caribbean.
The agreement was signed by ECLAC executive
secretary Alicia Barcena and Dorothee Fiedler,
general director for Latin America from the German
Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
Both sides promised to continue joint works in areas
such as climate change, clean energy, energy
efficiency and fiscal cooperation.
The BMZ began to help the ECLAC with funding
projects through the German Agency of Technical
Cooperation (GTZ) in the 1990s.
The BMZ and the GTZ established a strategic alliance
in 2003 to work together on the development of Latin
America and the Caribbean. Germany joined the ECLAC
in 2005. |
