Aires, 2011 World Book Capital
Paris - The city of Buenos Aires was elected
World Book Capital for 2011, according to a UN
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO) press release.
This selection answered to the quality and variety
of the proposed program and the general strategy it
involves, the text explained.
The jury in charge of the selection was composed of
representatives of the three main international
professional associations of the book world and
UNESCO.
The Argentinian capital is the 11th designated city,
after Madrid (2001), Alexandria (2002), New Delhi
(2003), Antwerp (2004), Montreal (2005), Turin
(2006), Bogota (2007), Amsterdam (2008), Beirut
(2009) and Ljubljana (2010).
The selecting committee was also pleased with the
presence of two sub-Saharan cities, Lagos in Nigeria
and Porto-Novo in Benin, among the seven candidates.
The jury expressed its wish that literature and the
regional editorial policy gain strength, the pres
