Hondurans for Constitutional Reform

Tegucigalpa - Unionists, farmers, Indigenous People and students marched in Honduras in support of the June 28 official poll for reforms to the Constitution.

The largest rallies were held in Tegucigalpa where over 10,000 people marched from the Comayagüela neighborhood to Congress.

The poll will show if the people wish to elect the president, legislators and mayors, set up a Constituent Assembly and reform the Magna Carta.

The current Constitution has 379 articles, including seven that cannot be changed, including the form of government, and definition of national territory.

The government of President Manuel Zelaya will give people the opportunity to decide on their future by redrafting the Constitution. Analyst Victor Manuel Ramos says the changes would help change the fact that the government is run by only a few people.
