Berrocal Betting On the "Silent Majority"

Fernando Berrocal, former ministra de Seguridad, was at work at his law office right up to hours before the opening of the elections of a new leader by the Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN).

Berrocal, like the other two candidates, former vice-president, Laura Chinchilla, and San Jose mayor (on temporary leave), Johnny Araya, are seeking to be the PLN candidate in today's vote and hopefully president in the 2010 presidential elections.

Chinchilla and Araya have both been running extensive media campaigns, while Berrocal has been somewhat silent.

The former minister told a Spanish language weekly earlier this week that he doesn't have the funds to run an elaborate campaign and is betting on the "silent majority" to vote him, to elect him party candidate.

Berrocal added that he, unlike his competitors, is using his savings to finance the political campaign and has to continue to work during the last six months to keep his family fed.

The former minister assures that he has tremendous support from a large number of Costa Ricans who have been quiet during this time leading up to the convention and is confident that he will get their vote once they are in the privacy of the elections booth.

The former minister assures he has no commitments to large organizations for political power, nor with any of the major economic interests in the country and thus the reason people should vote for him.
