Cases In Costa Rica Spirals to 68
Following a lull in the number of
confirmed cases of the AH1N1 flu
virus in Costa Rica, the numbers
shot up drastically from Monday's 50
to 68 as confirmed by the ministerio
de Salud yesterday afternoon.
The health ministry confirmed that
it has investigated 1.575 suspected
cases since April 25, of which it
has discarted 1.379 and 127 are
still waiting test results from the
Instituto Costarricense de
Investigación y Enseñanza en
Nutrición y Salud (Inciensa).
The ministra de Salud, María Luisa
Ávila, said that almost half of the
confirmed cases have recovered and
the rest are being treated for a
"mild" infection. One person did on
May 9 related to the AH1N1 flu
virus.
The ministra said the numbers are
within the range forecast and there
is no need for alarm, altough people
should not let down their guard and
maintain a proper regim of hygene,
like washing hands thoroughly with
soap and water, and controlling the
spread of germs in a sneeze or
cough.
Health officials say that the
distribution of the confirmed
infections are: San José 39,
Alajuela 5, Heredia 17, Cartago 5
and Guanacaste 2.
To prevent a spread of the virus
among chidren in the hospital, the
Dirección del Hospital Nacional de
Niños (Children's hospital) adopted
measures at the hospital that
include that only one adult, who
will be issued a special pass, can
accompany a child for medical
appointments and controlling the
entrance at the Consulta Externa.
