Guatemalan, Brazilian Leaders Discuss Energy, Drug Trafficking

Guatemala -- Visiting Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Tuesday met with his Guatemalan counterpart Alvaro Colom to discuss cooperation in energy and fight against drug trafficking, local reports reaching here said.

According to documents signed during the visit, Brazilian firms are expected to invest in exploration and production of hydrocarbons in Guatemala while the Brazilian government will take part in a hydroelectric project there.

The two sides also agreed to open negotiations for Guatemala to buy six Brazilian jet fighter Super Tucano, which will be used to fight drug trafficking and organized crime.

At the start of Lula's visit, which began on Monday, the leaders held a minute of silence in commemoration of the 228 passengers who are still missing, presumably dead, aboard Air France flight 447 from Rio de Janeiro to Paris. The Airbus 330-200 went down into the Atlantic early hours on Monday about four hours after taking off.
