US Levers with Bolivia Landholders
La Paz - Economic and political power
groups of Pando department allow operations by
soldiers of the US Southern Command in national
territory, charged the minister of the Bolivian
presidency, Juan Ramon Quintana.
For Quintana these large landowners and politicians
who control this Bolivian region bordering with
Brazil and especially those of the opposition
alliance, Poder Democrático y Social (PODEMOS) are
only concerned about their interests and not the
sovereignty of the country.
He stressed that the presence of the US Southern
Command in Pando went overboard because it was used
to support political and subversive activities of
local authorities to unleash a civic-military coup
against the government of Evo Morales.
These persons prefer to encroach our sovereignty
instead of allowing the state to protect national
territory from foreign interference, the minister
added.
According to Quintana, the Southern Command is
politically aligned with former prefect Leopoldo
Fernandez, jailed in a prison of La Paz for his
involvement in the massacre of campesinos in
September of 2003.
There is proof of participation of soldiers from the
US and its diplomatic mission in Bolivia, in
handling Porvenir and other regions of Pando to
support political work in favor of Fernandez, the
official added. |
