Drought-Hit Uruguay
Montevideo -
Fearing losing their
cattle out of thirst or
hunger, Uruguayan dairy
producers are selling
cows at laughable
prices: $10 to $40
because of the heavy
drought hitting the
country.
The unusual offer,
posted at Ultimas
Noticias on-line
edition, was made in
Tala, 49 miles northeast
of Montevideo.
In despair, as he only
had water for his
cattle, a producer told
the dramatic
circumstances in which
he lost three cows,
which "died after being
gored in their
scrambling for water
from a gutter."
Some days ago, Uruguayan
small dairy producers
declared a state of
emergency for drought,
the worst in 80 years in
some areas. The
government decided to
grant them zero-interest
loans to buy fodder.
Beef is Uruguay's main
export commodity, with
record sales worth $1.33
billion in 2008. The
country also exports one
billion liters of milk a
year, or seven percent
of its total production.
