Chilean Ship Loaded With Gold Sinks In Atlantic

Buenos Aires - A Chilean fishing vessel loaded with some seven tons of unrefined gold and silver capsized in a storm in January in Argentine waters of the south Atlantic, the Argentine authorities said on Friday.

Seven crew members and one passenger on the "Polar Mist" were all rescued by two helicopters of the Argentine Army moments before the boat sank on Jan. 16, local daily "La Nacion" reported.

The ship is currently lying on the seabed some 80 to 100 meters deep in the water, sources from the Argentine Navy Police (PNA) told Xinhua.

The ship set sail on Jan. 15, and sent an SOS call one day later when it encountered the storm. A Chilean tugboat had tried to drag it out of Argentine waters, but failed, the PNA said.

The crew kept the engine on when they abandoned the ship to try to exhaust the fuel and minimize any damage to the environment, reports said.

The ship was loaded with 6,900 kg of minerals worth of about 110 million U.S. dollars, the "La Nacion" said.
