Worried About U.S.-Ecuador Ties On Diplomat Expulsion
Quito - President of the Andean
Parliament Ivonne Baki said on Thursday that the expulsion of a U.S.
diplomat by Ecuador would have a bad effect on the ties between the
two countries.
Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa ordered on Wednesday the
"immediate" expulsion of Mark Sullivan, the first secretary in the
U.S. embassy's office of regional affairs, for an "unacceptable
intromission on internal affairs of Ecuador".
"I think everything done in this way affects the ties, so we must be
cautious, to make things with calmness and to review the reasons
before being impulsive," Baki, a Ecuadorian, told to a local radio
station.
"U.S. President Barack Obama wants to set bridges with the
countries, specially with Latin America, (so) I do not think it is
the right moment to have this kind of reactions, which can be done
in a more discreet way," Baki said.
After the announcement of the expulsion, U.S. Assistant Secretary
for Western Hemisphere Affair, Thomas Shannon, said in Washington
that he objected the Ecuador's decision and considered it "very
regrettable", "unfair" and "little kind."
Sullivan was the second U.S. diplomat expelled from Ecuador this
month after the attache Armando Astorga who had to leave for the
similar accusation of alleged interference in internal affairs.
