Child Immunization Program in Honduras

Tegucigalpa -  Honduras health authorities announced the implementation of a massive vaccination campaign to begin coming Monday, to prevent diarrhea diseases in infants less than 6 months of age.

Some 180 000 children will be immunized during 2009 in Honduras, health authorities sources say and add chronic diarrhea is the main cause of death in children in this country.

This is the first time Honduras fights chronic diarrhea by using a vaccine against the virus that causes it.

This virus causes intense vomiting and diarrhea, killing each year almost 600 000 children in under developed nations.

The head of the childhood immunization program in Honduras Berenice Molina confirmed the annual cost of the program amounts to 3.2 million dollars.
