Price of Rice and Taxi Fares

The price of rice in Costa Rica protected by government which
establishes the maximum price to the consumer.
Prices can be lower due to retailer promotion, however, a retailer
who sells above the maximum price can face a fine of between 10 and
40 salarios mínimos (minimum salaries). The Ministerio de Economía
keeps an eye on key retail prices such as rice and investigates
consumer complaints.
The Autoridad Reguladora de los Servicios Públicos (Aresep),
contrary to taxi union protests, agreed to drop the price of taxi
service by ¢40 colones for the first kilometre and ¢45 colones for
each additional kilometre.
The change means that the taxi meter of cabs will start at ¢430 and
not the current ¢470 and each additional kilometre will be charged
at ¢385, down from ¢430. The "demora" (stalled in traffic) rate also
drops, from ¢4.300 to ¢3.850, while the "espera" (wait) rate goes up
¢30 colones.
However, there is no exact date when the new prices will take effect
as the Aresep has to still hold the required public hearings, which
must be held within a month.
