5.8 Earthquake Shakes Southern
Peru
Lima - The earthquake that shook southern Peru on Monday noon was
confirmed of 5.8 Richter magnitude, according to the latest report
of the Geophysics Institute of Peru (IGP), which in a preliminary
report said the earthquake was of 6 magnitude.
The earthquake intensity was of level V in the southern provinces of
Pisco and of level IV in Chincha, level II in south department of
Huancavelica and II in Lima, according to the Modified Mercalli
scale (MM), the IGP said.
The epicenter was located at 73 kilometers west to Pisco, in the
department of Ica, with a deepness of 35 kilometers. The earthquake
occurred at 12:53 p.m. local time (1753 GMT), according to the IGP.
Brigades of Civil Defense from the five provinces of the department
of Ica began the evaluation of possible damages.
Regional director of the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci)
in Ica, Cesar Chonate, said that after a first investigation there
were not reports about emergencies or damages.
On August 2006, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake lasted more than 2
minutes in the provinces of Canete, Chincha, Pisco, and Ica, from
100 kilometers to 320 kilometers south to Lima, killed 596 people,
destroyed 70,000 houses and left thousands of people homeless.
