To Lead In Vaccination Of Children and
Youths Today
Today the "Tren Urbano" (Commuter Train)
will be changing its name and for a good
reason. The commuter train wil be carrying
children and youths delivering a message to
the mass to be up to date with their
vaccinations.
The train is being dubbed "Tren de la
Vacunación" (Vaccine Train) will be making
an important stop at the Estación del
Pacífico, where the passengers will be
vaccinatred against Neumococo (Pneumococcal
- Pneumonia Vaccination).
The vaccination program is part of an
activity promoted by the World Health
Organization (WHO) and part of its Expanded
Programme on Immunization (EPI).
The WHO says vaccines - which protect
against disease by inducing immunity - are
widely and routinely administered around the
world based on the common-sense principle
that it is better to keep people from
falling ill than to treat them once they are
ill. Vaccination is considered to be one of
the most cost-effective health
interventions.
Pneumococcal vaccination is a method of
preventing a specific type of lung infection
(pneumonia) that is caused by Pneumococcus
bacterium. There are more than 80 different
types of pneumococcus bacteria-23 of these
are covered in the current vaccination.
The vaccine is injected into the body to
stimulate the normal immune system to
produce antibodies that are directed against
pneumococcus bacteria.
