Warn of Dangerous Propane Gas Without Smell
LPG or propane is commonly used in the
kitchens of homes and restaurants in Costa
Rica. The gas has an odour added to it so it
can be noticed in the case of a leak.
However, authorities have found a quantity
of the gas without the traditional odour,
which makes it risky.
The Autoridad Reguladora de los Servicios
Públicos (Aresep) that a delay shipment of
Ethylmercaptan, the odour added to the gas,
has meant the gas to be sold without it.
According to the Refinadora Costarricense de
Petróleo (Recope) report to the Aresep, it
won't be until Saturday that the odour
levels will be at the normal levels, as the
ship containing the odour has docked, but it
won't be until the weekend that the product
will be in their hands and ready to be added
to the gas.
"It is imperative that the institution (Recope)
acquires the product prior to its
exhaustion" said the La Defensoría de los
Habitantes (Ombudsman's office) in a
statement to the press yesterday, as it
warned residents and businesses to be
prepared to avoid any accidents.
