Thwart Assassination Plot Against President
La Paz - Bolivian police on Thursday foiled
a plot to assassinate President Evo Morales,
killing three in a shootout in eastern
Bolivia, authorities said.
The operation was carried out on Thursday
early morning in the eastern city of Santa
Cruz. Three people, two Hungarians and a
Bolivian, were killed and two arrested, said
Vice President Alvaro Garcia.
Police seized explosives and high-caliber
weapons and found documents about the plan
to kill the president when he returns from
the Summit of the Americas held in Trinidad
and Tobago over the weekend, he said.
"The documents are about preliminary
preparation to kill the president," said
Garcia.
The government also had evidence of the
presence of these "terrorists" in public
events which Morales attended, he added.
According to Garcia, the members of this
criminal group were Hungarians, Croatians
and Bolivians.
Morales, Bolivia's first indigenous
president, has faced strong opposition in
relatively wealthy regions of the country,
including Santa Cruz.
Santa Cruz's governor Ruben Costas, a strong
opposition against Morales, said the
operation was "anomalous and totally
illegal" since police and prosecutors form
Santa Cruz were not involved.
In response, Garcia said "responsibility and
collaboration" are needed now because "not
only the government (of Morales) but also
the institutions of Santa Cruz department
were being tracked" by these terrorists.
