Accident Deaths Down During Semana Santa
Semana Santa is a time for family and
personal enjoyment, many heading out to the
beaches and mountains. However, tragedy
doesn't take a rest for the holidays, as a
total of 31 deaths were recorded by the Cruz
Roja Costarricense (Red Cross) as of
Saturday.
The majority of the fatalities were from
aquatic accidents (10), followed by
aggression with firearms and knives (9) and
traffic accidents (4).
This year, in contract to previous years,
traffic accidents don't lead the list of
fatalities.
Huanelge Gutiérrez, subrictor of the Policia
de Tránsito, said that the intensive patrols
and spot checks has shown results. Gutiérrez
added that his officers handed out some
5.600 traffic tickets (as of noon yesterday)
for the week.
Last year there were a total of 31 deaths
recorded during Semana Santa and in 2007
there were 52, of which 25 were from traffic
accidents.
According to the Centro de Control de
Operaciones (Opertaions Centre) of the Cruz
Roja, rescue workers responded to 35 calls
involing aquatic accidents.
Milton Chaverri, subdirector of Cruz Roja
operations, said that many do not take care
and check for dangerous currents before
heading into the water. Chaverri explained
that not check the depth is also very common
by Semana Santa vacationers. |
