Panama School Year Delayed

education authorities might be forced to
reprogram the beginning of the 2009 school
year after delays in school repair works.
According to the education Ministry, $74
million were allocated this to different
construction and maintenance works in 450
schools.
They invested $11 other millions in adapting
laboratories to teach Chemistry and Biology.
However, the delay in executing the works
determined that only a little over 50
percent of the areas to be used in the
school year would be ready before April 13.
Parent associations and others of the
sector's professionals expressed concern
about the delays in the construction and
repair works, because it could affect the
school year development.
Between 16,000 and 50,000 students would be
affected at the beginning of the school
year, due to the delays in the preparations
of the infrastructure.
Several cases of delays are due to non
fulfillment by companies hired to do the
jobs, something that forced to cancel the
contracts and look for other executors.
Some schools have already found
alternatives, using temporary places to
avoid suspension of classes, until the
planned works are finished.
The public educational system should receive
the current year around 720,000 students in
its different levels. |
