Without A Gynecologist
The women's advocacy group have their hands
up in the air at the thought the women's
prison, El Buen Pasto, does not count with a
gynecologist for more than 18 months.
The pregnant women being held at the prison
are being placed at risk at not having a
gynecological expert at the prisob,
according to the Defensoría de la Mujer.
According to prison officials, pregnant
women are escorted to the Carit women's
hospital for medical attention.
The Buen Pastor is home to some 460 women
and since the end of 2007 does not have a
gynecologist on staff, who was transferred
to the central offices of the ministerio de
Justicia.
The Adaptación Social says the the women at
the prison receive medical attention even
though there isn't a specialist on staff.
Reynaldo Villalobos, director of the
Adaptación Social, said that the problem has
been solved by an agreement with the Caja
Costarricense del Seguro Social (CCSS) -
social security - and to date there have
been no major problems.
Villalobos refused to comment on the reasons
why the specialist was moved and more
important, was never replaced. Unofficially
the specialist had asked for a transfer for
reasons of harassment.
Alejandra Mora of the Defensoría de la Mujer
said the situation is unacceptable.
Mora added that in many cases the medical
visits are subject to available
transportation and manpower to escort the
women to the Carit, which is not always
available and places the women at risk.
For her part the Ministra de Justicia,
Viviana Martin, the problem will be solved
soon. The ministra said that a permanent
appointment will be announced after Semana
Santa.
