10,000 Peruvian Policemen On Alert Ahead of Fujimori's Sentence

Lima - A total of 10,000 Peruvian policemen were put on a three-day alert in Lima Monday, a day before a court in Lima rules on the trial of former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, police officers said.

General Carlos Leon, top police officer in Lima, said that the alert began at 16:00 local time (2100 GMT) Monday.

"From Monday 10,000 will be on alert till Wednesday to offer security services in different sectors of the city," Leon told reporters.

He said that police are fully deployed to guarantee order in the National Direction of Special Operations (Dinoes) where Fujimori is imprisoned.

General director of the National Police, General Muricio Remicio, met on Monday morning with Dinoes chief, General Luis Muguruza, to check all the details related to the security around the place where Fujimori is being judged.

Fujimori's supporters began to gather in the place since 16:00 local time, as they have been protesting since Dec. 10, 2007 when the trial began.

Fujimori, who had been president from 1990 to 2000, is accused of crimes against humanity for the killing of politicians from the opposition.

Prosecutors accuse Fujimori of being responsible for the killing of 25 people, including a minor, by a military command, and the kidnapping and torture of a businessman and a journalist.

The prosecutors have demanded 30 years of imprisonment for Fujimori.
