Fidel Castro Is Doing Much Better, Daniel Ortega Says

Managua – Cuban leader Fidel Castro, who has been convalescing from a serious intestinal ailment since July 2006, is doing much better and is even walking around the streets of Havana, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega said on the weekend.

“It’s incredible how Fidel has been recuperating. He’s in much better shape now. I saw him,” said Ortega in remarks collected Sunday on the Nicaraguan government Web site El Pueblo President, which – however – did not publish any photographs from the meeting between the two men last Friday.

The Sandinista leader met with Castro on Friday in Havana during his first official visit to the communist island since he won a second term in office in January 2007.

Ortega said that Castro, who has not made a formal public appearance since he got sick, told him on Friday that he takes walks through “stretches of the city of Havana.”

“Absolutely, he was walking around. He’s recovering, thank God, and every day he’s writing and is always interested in learning (what’s going on in) Nicaragua,” Ortega said.

In addition, the Nicaraguan leader said that the last time he had seen the now-82-year-old Cuban was in June 2007 in Havana during an unofficial visit he made to the island in the course of an international tour that took him to Venezuela, Algeria, Libya, Iran and Senegal.

Ortega said that Castro asked him “how the struggle is going in Nicaragua” and how the literacy program Cuba is promoting in the Central American country is faring.

The Nicaraguan leader also said he was “happy” and “satisfied” with his meeting with Castro and with his official visit to the island, which ended on Saturday.
