BUENOS AIRES - Brazilian
President Luiz Inacio
Lula da Silva voiced his
commitment to regional
integration and the
strengthening of the
Southern Common Market (Mercosur).
"I believe in and defend
South American
integration and even
more so, the
strengthening of
MERCOSUR," Lula told
Clarin special
correspondents reporting
on Argentina President
Cristina Fernandez'
visit to Brazil.
According to Lula, both
nations must not see
each other as rivals,
but rather as partners.
"Argentina has to see
Brazil as a market of
190 million inhabitants,
bordering it. We don't
need ships or 14-hour
flights to trade with
each other. We can do it
by just crossing a
bridge."
He highlighted the
importance of reaching a
bilateral trade worth
over $30 billion this
year, and announced that
tomorrow he will sign an
agreement with the
Argentine President,
officially establishing
the use of local
currencies (reals and
pesos) in bilateral
trade.
"Brazil is very much
aware that the more
harmonious and
productive our relation,
the more we will
contribute to strengthen
MERCOSUR an South
American integration,"
he stressed.
