89.000 Affected By Last
Week's Storm
The total number of
people directly or
indirectly affecte by
last week's storm was
calculated as 89.000 by
the Comisión Nacional de
Emergencias (CNE) -
national emergency
commission.
In Guanacaste 1.018
peole are still living
in shelters as the
torrential rains and
flooding destroyed their
homes. In Fildelfia, one
of the hardest hit areas
in Guanacaste, 53
children under the age
of two are being housed
in the Escuela Central.
The CNE is asking for
donations, primarily of
food and diapers for the
children.
In in the Central
Pacific town of Parrita,
the CNE announced that
it has closed all the
shelters and has begun
the process of
calculating the
extensive damage caused
the storm.
The Ministerio de Obras
Públicas y Transportes
(MOPT) estimates that
the floods and
landslides caused by the
rain caused some ¢4
billion colones in
damages to primary
(asphalted) and
secondary (gravel) roads
all over the country.
MOPT minister, Karla
González, said that the
amount may be much
higher when the water
levels recede and the
full damage can be
assessed by MOPT
engineers, who will be
out in full force today
in various locations
around the country to
evaluate the conditions
and costs.
The minister explained
that many roads in
Guanacaste were
completely inundated, as
mud and debris blocking
some passages, where
machinery will be
required to fully open
those routes.
The high water levels in
the rivers will also
mean delays in the
completion of the
Costanera Sur, said
González, in some places
the delays could be as
much as three months.
