Nicaraguan Parliament
Paralyzed
Managua - An opposition
law Project led to
annule the recent
municipal elections,
which results widely
favored the National
Sandinista Liberation
Front (FSLN) is keeping
the Nicaraguan
Parliament paralyzed.
Nicaraguan National
Assembly president Rene
Nuñez suspended a
meeting of the Directing
Board Monday, in which
the agenda for the
coming days would be
discussed.
Nuñez insisted on the
idea that the
Legislative Power has
not any jurisdiction on
electoral topics and
rejected the submission
of the law project to a
debate.
“I want to leave clearly
established that the
National Assembly does
not have any faculty to
take decisions on
electoral topics,” Nuñez
stated.
Nuñez exhorted his
colleagues of the
opposition to discuss on
other topics such as the
approval of the 2009
budget.
Wilfredo Navarro,
secretary of the
Nicaraguan Parliament,
and a member of
opposition Liberal
Constitutionalist Party,
assured, however, that
the PLC representation
to the Parliament will
insist on taking the law
project to discussion
and accused FSLN of
keeping the Parliament
paralyzed.
PLC wants to annule the
November 9 elections, in
which FSLN won 105 of
the 146 mayor offices
disputed.
Last Friday, Nicaraguan
President Daniel Ortega
assured before thousands
of followers in Managua,
that the Electoral
Supreme Council (CSE) is
the only state power and
the only national
authority with
jurisdiction and
competence.
Sandinistas (FSLN) have
38 seats out of 92. PLC
has 26 and the rest is
occupied by other
minority
representations, some of
which are FSLN allied.
