The Legislative Assembly
has approved, in first
debate, the bill
creating a special tax
on telephone bills to
finance the work of the
Cruz Roja Costarricense
(Costa Rican Red Cross).
A tax of 1% of will be
applied to all telephone
bills - both fixed line
and cellular - over
˘5.000 to a maximum of
˘500 colones.
What that means is that
a telephone bill of say
˘10.000 colones will be
taxed ˘100 that will go
to the Cruz Roja.
The tax is expected to
raise ˘2.5 billion
colones a year for the
Cruz Roja, 10% of which
will be used for
administration, the
balance to be
distributed to the local
branches.
The president of the
Cruz Roja, Miguel
Carmona, explained that
the funds will reach all
Red Cross branches
across the country.
The bill requires second
reading before it
becomes law. |
