Transport Cost Rise Hits
Guatemalans
Guatemalan suburban,
school and taxi
transport entrepreneurs
announced their decision
Wednesday to increase
passenger prices again,
which will severely
affect the economy of
Guatemalan families.
Beginning May 1st,
longer routes will have
an increase of at least
14 cents for each 31
miles.
Ten days ago transport
workers and enterprises
decreed a similar
increase and they do not
disregard new
adjustments in May if
the price of diesel
keeps going up.
Those most affected will
be people from the
interior departments who
work or study in the
capital and return
weekly to visit their
families.
Children who bus to
school suffered a 30
percent increase; a
service much used in the
capital because parents
fear holdups and
extortions on regular
public transport.
Byron Muralles,
president of the
National Association for
School Transport, said
that those now paying
$47 a month will now pay
$61 dollars.
Taxi drivers began to
collect 15 percent more
in the capital and other
municipalities because
of the increase of
gasoline, oil and
lubricants. |
